"To what extent does media ownership have an impact on the successful distribution of media products in the media area that you have studied?"

Media ownerships have a massive impact on the successful distribution of media products as without the company media products wouldn't be promoted and the company would lose profits. Media ownerships have to try and successfully distribute media products as it'll gain their company more viewers. In today's generation, many media ownerships use digitalisation to successfully distribute media products. In today's society there are now more prosumers, meaning more and more people are becoming active, engaging with the companies so they'll have a clear idea on what the public want or don't want, what the like or dislike; this then helps the company to stay on their game, preventing bankruptcy. Marcus Rich said 'Magazine chiefs urge industry change from burning platform to growth", this suggests that if the company doesn't update themselves with today's generation they won't be able to grow or improve. This implies that in order for media ownerships to distribute media products and have an impact they must go out of their comfort zone and change.

Bauer Media Group is one of the largest privately own publishing group as it's a conglomerate, this means that it's a company that owns others. The reason why they have all this power is because their magazines have a huge effect on their viewers since they own 300 magazines in over 15 countries they target their magazines at different audiences, not only that but they use convergence to deliver their media products. For example, in 1996 they acquired the digital music TV channel called 'The Box' which then eventually grew into The Box Television considering many viewers engaged with this show. This shows the effect that the public has as they've become more active. The advantage of this for Bauer Media is that they can then promote media products much more quickly, not to mention it's easier for them.

Furthermore, Bauer Media uses convergence such as social media, television, radio etc to promote themselves. Technology has become a key element in distributing media products since its easy to access, more people can now find out all the news and updates of a certain magazine company. However, magazines have recently been in decline in the UK as it decreased from 1.21 billion in 2007 to 781 million last year, Bauer Media have had to look for new ways in order to still keep publishing their magazine but in different ways so they've had to use convergence to do this.

Bauer Media Group also owns Kerrang! magazine which is targeted at people who are interested in rock music, specifically adults (15+) and they also use convergence to distribute media products. They do this by interacting with their audience, talking to them on social media to voice their opinions out so that they have a clear idea on what the public want to see because if they don't like it or disagree with it, the media ownership will start losing profit. Kerrang! also uses synergy such as the Kerrang! Festival hosted every month, competitions and Kerrang! merchandise for the audience to connect with the magazine company. Bauer Media makes sure these products impact their company in a good way so they can continue entertaining the public by giving them various opportunities to take part in so they successfully distribute their media products. Proof of this is that in the UK Bauer Media gain 22 million adults (15+) every week, this is evidence that the company is successfully having an impact to the public as they enjoy reading about their magazines.

However, it is to a certain extent that media ownership have an impact on the successful distribution of media products as another factor would be the prosumers, without the help of prosumers, less media products would be distributed as its mainly the prosumers who now have the decision on what to release or not release. They are now the ones who help media ownerships stay in profit. Since magazine companies also have niche audiences, most of the viewers are more loyal and committed, so they're more likely to keep the company going so they're still publishing on not just only magazines but also on social media , for example Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc, their websites, TV channels so that it covers a broader audience for the company.

Music magazine planning                                                              Saturday 23rd April 2016

Flat plan of cover, contents page and double spread                 Saturday 23rd April 2016

For my flat plan, I have drawn a rough draft of how I would like my cover page, contents page and double spread. By doing this I have an idea of how it's going to look like so I can use this to create my magazine and if any changes are made I can see what suits my layout or not.

Cover page:

Contents page:

For my contents page I have coloured the boxes in different colours so I can then label what they are. The blue is where the title 'contents' is going to go, so the audience has a clear indication on where they are on. The red is where my images are going to go, the reason I have done it this way is I have used inspiration from a book I have read called 'If I Stay' by Gayle Forman, although it wasn't music genre related, I liked the idea and the layout of the image. The orange is where the page numbers are going to be placed, I have kept the idea of the page number large as seen on my mock up contents page and the black is w2here the subheadings of each article is going to placed, they are also going to be outlined so that it's bold. The Lastly, the green is where information about each article is going to go.

Photo shoot image choices                                                         Saturday 23rd April 2016

Photo shoot log                                                                            Wednesday 9th March 2016

The photo shoot I did enabled me to obtain certain photos I needed for my magazine, I took a lot of photos because this way I could have a range of options to choose on what I wanted to go in for my magazine rather than having less options as I wouldn't have enough images and this wouldn't make my magazine look presentable, organised or eye catching as images are essential for a magazine since they are a main factor in what makes a magazine a magazine.

For my front cover I chose to have a pop band to be seen, I worked alongside my friends and the three of us were photographed by our other friend Olivia. We took many photos however we didn't stay in the same pose or position as this wouldn't give us a options of what to choose and to compare before deciding. Our friend Olivia took mid shots, long shots and close ups against a white background not only for our front cover but also for the double page spread.

Then, I had a turn on the camera to participate and took photos of my friends individually, mostly close ups of them so it could be included on the double page spread. The relevance of this is so that I could show each person in the band and talk about them in my magazine. We each had a turn in taking photos and using varies of props for our shoot instead of it always being the same every time. We also used a green screen for our magazine and not just a white backdrop so that we could have an effect if we wanted to.

We also learnt how to use the mode dial and this was used depending on the camera mode you wanted it on, this was depending on the type of photo you wanted, or to adjust it to a certain lighting. An example of a camera mode we got to use was the' Shutter mode' as this would pick up a quick movement and it would enable the camera to get the shot of you moving because my group chose to all jump at the same time so we used this option to get the right shot. Not to mention, we went into another room and there was a black backdrop and a soft box light that we could use as a silhouette and where we could also take picture for certain props, this was useful as I got to use these shots for my magazine.

Magazine article (draft):

This week we sat down with a new pop band ‘The Hype’ who have taken the world by storm. The famous band were first discovered on YouTube by Scooter Braun, who has managed Justin Bieber since he was 16. The Hype has gained mass attention from teenagers across the world, before becoming famous by covering well known artists/bands on their YouTube channel which did not go unnoticed. These three British girls know how to spark people’s attention by not only doing amazing covers acoustically but they also make their own music which has been all over the media, from Twitter to Facebook to Instagram, you name it!  They have provided the music scene with some much needed new, upbeat and frankly, addictive music that will leave you wanting more!

We asked each member how it felt to be in the limelight after being discovered.  “It’s surreal! We still haven’t fully adjusted to how our lives have changed overnight.”  Though the girls may be living the life and following their dreams just like anyone else, there also comes hate with the fame and we made sure to ask them about their haters and their response was inspirational.  “We try to not let it affect us, since we get to make music and share it with our fans.”

These girls certainly won’t let anything get past them; they've recently been nominated for the New Artist Award in the MTV Music Awards, not to mention a nomination for a People’s Choice Award for favourite group. Within a year, the girls, Tricia, Isabelle and Sinead have dominated the pop music industry and we have yet to see them fail on their rise to fame, their new single ‘Work From Home’ has gained more than 125 million views on YouTube in a month and has leaped to the top ten in the UK! Being managed by Scooter Braun has its perks as they're currently working on their new upcoming album and have had the opportunity to feature the notorious Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar bringing a twist to the pop industry mixing pop and RnB together, we have no doubt that their album is going to be a hit which will definitely leave the audience speechless. Not to mention, the girls spilled about a possible world tour that may take place next year, "We're still in the process of our album, but we will be planning a world tour very soon so that we can connect with more of our fans!" they explained.

These girls have stuck through thick and thin, making music and trying to make their dreams come true wasn't easy, so we asked the girls how they met each other. Sinead (top right photo) answered on how they all met saying, "We went to secondary school together and we were never really close, at first it was just me and Izzy (that's our nickname for her), but we didn't plan on pursuing making music but then Tricia came along and we all just clicked as a trio!" These girls certainly have had chemistry since day one, however the girls didn't always get along; like any friendship group they had disagreements but they managed to stick together and pursue their dreams, just shows how important friendship is in the music industry.

We asked the girls how each one of them are different to one another and the response we got was hilarious! Sinead replied saying "Tricia is energetic all the time, just when you're around her she's like a buzzing bee! Izzy's the outgoing person, she always pesters me and Tricia to go everywhere!" We then asked Tricia, "Snead's the one smiling and giggling; once she does everyone else just laughs with her. It's quite hard for me to describe Izzy, she's so random at times! She loves to dance all the time and me and Sinead will just join with her."  Izzy (bottom photo) said "Tricia's definitely the weird one, Sinead is like the mom of the group, she's always looking out for us when we need her so it's nice to have that support."
